Inspirational Warriors

Each month we will be highlighting a Positive Vibe Warrior, whose strong spirit, or valuable actions in their community have inspired others to overcome adversity in their own unique way… This month, we are featuring Codey Fears, and this is his incredible journey! Enjoy.

I am originally from DeLand, Florida which is about 30 minutes from New Smyrna Beach (one of my favorite surf spots in Florida.) Then when I was about 16 I moved to Ormond by the Sea right on the beach. When we moved to Ormond I was beyond stoked. I was up at 5-6 every morning checking the waves. Now I am living in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Growing up in DeLand got me into skateboarding, I was obsessed with it. My friends and I would skate around town and hang at the skate shop every day all day. My two favorite hobbies are pretty obvious, surfing and skating. But I am an adventurer, I love discovering new places and enjoying all the nature along the way.  Music is also a huge part of my life, it is pretty much always playing. I live a very active and outdoorsy lifestyle. I also try to eat as healthy as possible. I enjoy all types of sports, it fascinates me because people become so passionate about them.

When I was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma my parents made the decision to remain as positive as they could throughout the situation. They definitely helped a lot in shaping my attitude towards life. After surviving something like cancer you realize what is truly important in life and how lucky we are to be alive today. Throughout my whole life people have always asked questions like “Do you ever get mad?” and “Are you always this happy?” Remaining positive in life can turn any situation around and that’s what I love about it.  I try to live each day to the fullest and enjoy everything. I do my best to shine light on any bad situations. When I lost my left eye the doctors told my parents that my balance, depth perception and vision would not be the best. But they were wrong. Of course I have hit the left side of my head on pretty much everything growing up, but I never gave up on anything I’ve tried. When I am having problems landing a new trick I try to come at it from a different perspective and it always helps. For example for the longest time I was always missing the pocket on frontside barrels and I had no clue what I was doing wrong. So now I slightly turn my head to the left so I can position myself better. I honestly have no clue what it is like to see from both eyes. To me having one eye is normal and having two eyes seems confusing. No matter what anyone says you can or cannot do, if you keep a positive mind and good attitude anything is possible.

What truly inspired me to remain so positive throughout my life is life itself. I am beyond lucky to be here and experience this amazing world. If I could go back in time to change anything in my life I wouldn’t because the people I have met and the experiences I have had would never have happened. It’s really weird to say this but I am almost glad I had cancer because it changed my life for the better. I hope I can inspire others to stay positive even when everything around you is negative! Anytime you’re down just think of something that makes you happy. This is one of my favorite sayings and I use it all the time, you cannot get angry with things you cannot control. Stay Positive!
